ARTHIK SAMATA MANDAL

Arthik Samata Mandal (Association for Economic Equality) is the 13th Item of the Gandhian Constructive Program. It initially started as a movement and later on after the 1977 cyclone and tidal wave in Diviseema of Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, it was registered as an NGO in 1978. Ever since 1977, ASM has been working in the sectors of health, habitat, agriculture improvement, livelihood, education, child sponsorship, child rights, disaster relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and mitigation for the past 27 years. ASM has recently celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the field of development. The field of operation of ASM covers Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, East Godavari, West Godavari and Nalgonda. Its main target group include children, women, adolescents, youth, handicapped and aged who hail from below poverty line. It also works towards recognizing the survival, protection, development and participation rights of the children in all its developmental interventions.

ASM disaster relief and rehabilitation experience has been in 1977 Cyclones & Tidal wave, 1978 Krishna floods, 1979 Nellore floods, 1983 Krishna and Godavari floods, 1986 Godavari floods, 1990 Krishna floods, 1996 Krishna Cyclone, 1998 Krishna floods, 1999 Krishna floods, 2003 Krishna Cyclone and 2004 Tsunami. Its target group include tribals, handloom weavers, fisherfolk, small artisans, agricultural labourers and marginalized communities. ASM works with the local Self-Help Groups, Mahila Mandals, Youth Clubs, Children’s Clubs, Panchayats and other civil society organizations. In the field of health, Polio corrective surgeries are carried out to help hundreds of polio victims and regular follow up action is taken as a part of community-based rehabilitation program. Similarly, eye sight is restored to hundreds of people through cataract operations in the mass camps in the remote villages. Princess Anne, President of the Save the Children Fund (UK) visited Arthik Samata Mandal in 1986. Mr Veeraiah is Secretary of Arthik Samata Mandal.
